SAMSON: Employer Engagement Assembly, 24th March 10

We (Kirstie & Stuart) from the SAMSON project attended the JISC Employer Engagement assembly at Leicester College yesterday. It was organised by Lucy Stone of the HELLO project to bring together the Lifelong Learning & Workforce Development projects to discuss project interaction with employers and how these could be improved. We heard from the following projects: HELLO, our own, SAMSON and iWoBLE. guest speaker was Anita Pickerden from Foundation Degree Forward (fdf), who gave an excellent overview of best practice for working with employers.  From the SAMSON point of view (and other projects present), we have an interest in engaging employers in using new technologies. For this to be successful, there needs to be a good reason why an employer would want to use technology – how would it benefit them.  Also, the picture includes learners and tutors – so for a pilot to work, all parties need to know; why they are using it,  what it is, what it is for and how it will benefit them. As highlighted by presenters yesterday, the relationship with employers needs to be maintained and agile. They do not need to see the ‘wiring’ – true when discussing curriculum or technology – just what they need to know/see for their particular and individual purpose.Watch your languageWe try hard not to use jargon – as Anita pointed out, even “employer engagement” is jargon. When unpacked, what it really describes is the nature of the working partnership. E.g. The institution has X which will help you do YWe learnt a lot from rolling out ePortfolios for the LLN project in terms of how to engage disparate parties in using technology. It is not easy, and not every partnership will work, but there is plenty to learn. Some recommended resources”Do’s and Don’ts” when working with employers, from the Colleges, University of Leicester Network”Employer and Provider Partnships”, from fdf

Welcome to the SAMSON project blog

We will give an update of project activity and useful information here. Currently we are involved in baselining activity. We are looking at a number of existing and previous JISC projects as a part of this – if other projects are also reviewing JISC activity, it would be useful to share information.
