BR Validation Assembly, 17 May 2011

The University of Derby Corporate offered a very pleasant venue (and some fabulous food, including sausage and bacon breakfast rolls) for our Validation assembly for the SAMSON BR work. There was an impressive turnout, around 37 attendees including University of Derby and Nottingham staff, representatives from local FE colleges and employers and a sprinkling of JISC staff. Andrew Hartley from the University of Derby outlined the current funding situation and the likely (but as yet unconfirmed) position on part-time students, followed by a panel discussion bringing in Mike Ryan from Castle College, Nottingham, and Angela Dean from the University of Derby. Funding Presentation.ppt Kirstie Coolin and Ben Sams demonstrated the PebblePad based technology used in the SAMSON BR work at Derby Validation_AssemblyUoD_17th_May_2011_KC+BS.ppt , then Brian Counter (tutor to the pilot students) showcased the work based around the use of PebblePad with Foundation Degree students. Two of the students talked about their work and showcased their workbased project (on hot rolled asphalt) which was developed using PebblePad. BC Pebblepad May 17th Event v2.ppt In the afternoon Angela Smallwood from the University of Nottingham led a workshop session inviting participants to contribute their ideas about the potential of technology to support workbased learning in a variety of situations. This was punctuated by a session by Jane Bullivant from the Institute of Civil Engineers showing how the MICE professional qualification has been incorportated into the Derby FD course.
